Tokayev’s Spokesperson Highlights President’s 2024 Achievements
In an article published on Dec. 27 in Kazakhstanskaya Pravda, Berik Uali, spokesperson for President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, outlined the President’s key accomplishments during 2024.
Key Domestic Developments
- Urbanization: The transformation of the village of Zhetygen into Alatau City marked the year’s start, creating a new urban hub between Almaty and Konayev. The project gained international investor interest, particularly during Tokayev’s visit to Singapore, where integration of Almaty’s agglomeration into a free economic zone was discussed.
- Social Reforms: Legislative measures were introduced to ensure women’s rights, child safety, and public security, with tougher penalties for domestic violence, human trafficking, vandalism, and a ban on vapes. Initiatives to combat gambling addiction were also prioritized.
- Emergency Response: During the spring floods, Tokayev ensured swift evacuation, material support, and rehabilitation for affected citizens.
Economic and Environmental Milestones
- Economic Liberalization: A decree signed in May reduced state participation in the economy, promoted competition, and lowered business costs.
- Transport and Trade: Key projects included launching a logistics center in Xi’an, China, and enhancing the Trans-Afghan trade route in collaboration with Uzbekistan.
- Agriculture: Despite flood challenges, Kazakhstan achieved its largest grain harvest in a decade—26.7 million tons.
- Environmental Conservation: The Taza Kazakhstan campaign mobilized 2.4 million citizens, collecting 900,000 tons of waste and planting 2.5 million trees.
Energy Policy
In a historic Oct. 6 referendum, over 71% of voters approved constructing a nuclear power plant, a significant step in diversifying Kazakhstan’s energy portfolio.
Global Leadership
Kazakhstan chaired six major international organizations, including the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) and the Organization of Turkic States (OTS).
- The SCO summit in Astana led to 60 agreements and expanded partnerships.
- The OTS approved a unified Turkic alphabet and hosted the World Nomad Games, attracting 2,500 athletes from 90 countries.
