President Meets with Chairman of National Security Committee
During a meeting with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev on January 31, National Security Committee (NSC) Chairman Yermek Sagimbayev reported that security agencies had thwarted two terrorist plots within the country at their initial stages last year. Additionally, he mentioned that three joint operations with foreign intelligence agencies were conducted abroad. This information was relayed by the Akorda press service.
During the meeting, Sagimbayev briefed President Tokayev on the conviction of 43 individuals for terrorist and extremist crimes, as well as the coordination of 208 command and staff exercises and 196 operational-tactical counter-terrorism exercises by the NSC throughout the year.
Regarding economic security and anti-corruption efforts, Sagimbayev detailed that measures undertaken by the NSC resulted in a cumulative impact exceeding 1.5 trillion tenge (US$3.3 billion), with over 680 billion tenge (US$1.5 billion) returned to the state budget.
In terms of crime prevention, Sagimbayev reported that the NSC and Ministry of Internal Affairs dismantled 15 organized criminal groups, confiscated 681 weapons, and seized over 85,000 rounds of ammunition.(Source:astanatimes)
The NSC chairman also highlighted the disruption of 36 drug laboratories, closure of 34 international and 32 regional drug trafficking routes, and seizure of over 3.6 tons of drugs.
Additionally, Sagimbayev noted the detection of 31,000 individuals involved in illegal migration and border violations, and the prevention of 739 attempts to transport weapons, ammunition, drugs, illegal currency, and goods.
Regarding information security, Sagimbayev mentioned the repelling of over 86.3 million cyber-attacks and 2,156 DDoS attacks on critical infrastructure.
Following the report, President Tokayev issued several specific instructions pertaining to the activities of national security agencies.
