Kazakhstan has secured agreements with Central Asian countries to receive 11 billion cubic meters of water by April, Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation Nurzhan Nurzhigitov announced on Jan. 29 at a regional commission meeting in Dushanbe.
The water will flow into the Shardara Reservoir in Turkistan Region via the Syr Darya River, with 1.6 billion cubic meters directed to the Aral Sea. Nurzhigitov emphasized Kazakhstan’s focus on water diplomacy to address irrigation needs in the south.
The country also plans to develop a digital water management system by 2025, covering key rivers, lakes, reservoirs, and canals to improve transparency and forecasting.
