Kazakhstan to Build New Power Generating Capacity

Samruk Energy's investment projects aim to generate 12 gigawatts (GW) in Kazakhstan by 2035, according to Kairat Maksutov, the Chair of Samruk Energy, as mentioned in a government meeting.

The investment projects envisage the construction of thermal plants with a capacity of 5.9 gigawatts (GW), hydro power plants generating 600 megawatts (MW), and renewable energy projects, including wind and solar power plants, with a combined installed capacity of 5.7 GW.

Kairat Maksutov discussed the ongoing projects for the construction of new combined cycle plants at Almaty Combined Heat and Power Plant-2 (CHP-2), Almaty Combined Heat and Power Plant-3 (CHP-3), and new thermal power plants in Kokshetau, Semei, and Ust-Kamenogorsk. The construction is part of an agreement signed between the Energy Ministries of Kazakhstan and Russia in November 2023. These projects are expected to be completed by 2027-2028 and will contribute to meeting the country's electricity demand. Samruk-Energy's current total electrical capacity is 7,845 MW, accounting for 32% of the country's total output. Energy Minister Almasadam Satkaliyev mentioned plans to build a new facility in Zhezkazgan, establish gas stations in several cities, and implement other measures.

To address the current electricity deficit and enhance export potential, the Ministry has formulated an action plan for the development of the electric power industry. The plan involves introducing additional new generating capacities of up to 35 GW. Currently, the country relies on 220 power plants, including 144 renewable energy facilities with a combined capacity of 2.8 GW. The equipment of these stations exhibits an average wear and tear level of 56%.(Source:astanatimes)
