Kazakhstan Sees Rapid Expansion in E-Commerce Sector

Kazakhstan’s e-commerce market has expanded significantly, reaching 3.2 trillion tenge (US$6.2 billion) and accounting for 14.1% of the country’s total trade, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin announced during a Mazhilis session on June 26.

Despite the sector’s growth, Zhumangarin acknowledged ongoing public concerns regarding online shopping, including fraud risks and consumer mistrust. He noted that e-commerce has become a key component of Kazakhstan’s trade landscape, though significant employment shifts are not anticipated. While job numbers may increase through formal declarations, no targeted job creation is planned in the sector.

One of the strongest indicators of the sector’s momentum is large-scale investment in logistics infrastructure. Kazpost is constructing 85,000 square meters of warehouse facilities across Almaty, Aktobe, and the Almaty and Turkistan Regions.

Major online marketplaces are also expanding their operations. Wildberries currently manages eight logistics centers totaling 44,000 square meters and is building an additional 271,000 square meters, including key hubs in Astana and Almaty. Ozon has two sorting centers in Almaty and Astana with a combined area of 42,000 square meters and is adding a 20,000-square-meter logistics hub in Almaty.
