Kazakhstan and Germany have agreed to collaborate on constructing an international cargo and passenger airport in Zhetisu

The Hansa Consortium of Germany is poised to invest in the construction of an international cargo and passenger airport within the Khorgos – Eastern Gate special economic zone, as announced by the press service of the Zhetisu Region’s administration on March 28.

The joint Kazakh-German project, with an investment value of 250 billion tenge ($559.2 million), aims to establish an international cargo and passenger airport in Zhetisu capable of handling 50,000 tons of cargo and accommodating up to 500 passengers per hour.

Expected to generate 700 job opportunities, the airport is slated for inauguration in 2027, with subsequent phased expansions planned to enhance production capacity. By 2032, the project aims to include the commissioning of a hotel and a shopping and entertainment center.

The project will progress through three stages, with the initial phase focusing on constructing the fundamental infrastructure. Subsequent phases will involve the completion of additional infrastructure and the expansion of passenger terminal capacity, cargo facilities, and fuel warehouses.

Investors also intend to diversify and enhance trade, tourism, food, and accommodation services within the airport's vicinity.
