Kazakh FM Advocates for Strengthening OSCE at Ministerial Meeting

Kazakh Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu emphasized preserving the OSCE as a platform for inclusive dialogue during the 31st OSCE Ministerial Council in Malta on Dec. 5. Ministers from 57 states reviewed this year’s outcomes under Malta’s chairpersonship and addressed security challenges and the organization’s institutional crisis.

Nurtleu called for a revival of the Helsinki spirit and adherence to principles of the Helsinki Final Act and Astana Declaration, stressing Kazakhstan's commitment to peace and stability. He proposed joint efforts to tackle climate change and invited states to the 2026 UN Regional Climate Summit in Kazakhstan.

On the sidelines, Nurtleu met with foreign ministers from Azerbaijan, Belgium, Türkiye, and others to discuss bilateral cooperation and regional issues.

A key outcome of the meeting was the approval of the OSCE Secretary General and heads of its institutions. Kazakhstan, an OSCE member since 1992, previously chaired the organization in 2010.
