Astana hosted the conference on Oct. 23, marking the end of a two-year European Union-funded project aimed at empowering local communities and enhancing public involvement in environmental decision-making in the Karagandy Region, one of the country’s most industrialized areas.
The EU-backed project, led by the Karagandy Regional Ecological Museum with German and Czech collaboration, addresses climate challenges in one of Kazakhstan's key industrial hubs. Karagandy’s industries, including mining, steel production, and energy, contribute significantly to Kazakhstan’s emissions, releasing over 600,000 tons of pollutants annually—24% of the nation's total emissions. The project aims to mitigate these impacts, emphasizing sustainable practices and resilience in a region highly susceptible to environmental and climate-related risks.
