Kazakhstan, U.S. Officials Discuss Repeal of Jackson–Vanik Amendment

Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Economy Serik Zhumangarin held a series of meetings with U.S. Congress members to discuss the repeal of the Jackson–Vanik amendment as it pertains to Kazakhstan, reaffirming the countries’ commitment to expanding economic partnership.

Zhumangarin met with lawmakers including Congressman Jimmy Panetta, Co-Chair of the Kazakhstan–U.S. Caucus, and members of the Budget and Tax Committee to explore opportunities in trade, investment, energy, artificial intelligence, digitalization, and education.

He expressed gratitude for U.S. support and emphasized Kazakhstan’s role as a stable and reliable platform for international business. U.S. legislators, including Congresswoman Carol Devine Miller and Congressman Thomas Suozzi, confirmed their readiness to advance the repeal process and strengthen bilateral cooperation.

The Jackson–Vanik amendment, enacted in 1974, is widely considered outdated, and its repeal for Kazakhstan is expected to facilitate trade and investment flows between the two countries.
