Kazakhstan plans to utilize floodwater collected in reservoirs to meet agricultural and industrial demands

The press service of the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation reported on May 3 that water collected in reservoirs will be utilized to fulfill agricultural and industrial requirements.

In response to the second wave of floods in the West Kazakhstan Region, specialists are actively managing the safe passage of floodwaters. Currently, the region's four major reservoirs are at 90% capacity.

To mitigate the impact, the ministry has redirected 400 million cubic meters of floodwater to the Ural-Kushum irrigation and water supply system in the West Kazakhstan Region. An additional 200 million cubic meters of water is slated for redirection in the near term. This allocation will benefit over 65,000 hectares of hayfields and summer pastures, while also replenishing reservoirs situated along the system.

Efforts are also underway to channel water to lakes such as Edilsor, Zhaltyrkol, Birkazan, Sorkol, Saltanat, and other reservoirs in the West Kazakhstan Region, which have been experiencing depletion in recent years.

“One of the ministry’s tasks is the accumulation of flood water in reservoirs for further use in agriculture and industry. Large reservoirs in many regions are 100% full, but this does not mean that there is a risk of overflow and flooding. Water that exceeds the norms is discharged in safe quantities into rivers and canals and used in agriculture and industry,” said Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation.(Source:astanatimes)
