Kazakhstan has been recognized as the most peaceful country in Eurasia, according to the **2024 Global Peace Index (GPI)** published by the Institute for Economics & Peace (IEP).
In the 18th edition of the GPI, which assesses 163 nations covering 99.7% of the world’s population, Kazakhstan rose from 78th to 59th in the global rankings, achieving the most significant improvement in the region. The country's overall peace score increased by 10.8%, leading among the 12 Eurasian countries included.
Despite this progress, the report cautioned that unresolved socio-economic grievances from 2022 and a decline in the Political Terror scale indicator might pose challenges to maintaining peace.
The Eurasian region as a whole recorded a 0.6% improvement in peace indicators, the largest among global regions. However, the region's peace level remains low due to ongoing conflicts, notably the war between Russia and Ukraine.
Of the 12 countries in the region, peace improved in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Moldova, and Tajikistan but deteriorated in Armenia, Kyrgyzstan, Turkmenistan, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Russia, and Ukraine.
Globally, Iceland retained its position as the most peaceful country, a title held since 2008, while Yemen ranked as the least peaceful nation.
The IEP, an independent non-profit organization, highlights peace as a measurable and vital factor for human progress and well-being.
“Kazakhstan recorded improvements on all domains, with the most significant improvements recorded on the violent demonstrations, intensity of internal conflict, nuclear and heavy weapons, and weapons imports indicators. The fall in the number of demonstrations reflects a fall in conflict risks and internal grievances over the past year,” the report reads.
