Trade turnover between Kazakhstan and Mongolia reached $83.9 million in January-August 2024, Kazinform reported on Oct. 28, citing the Kazakh Ministry of Trade and Integration, ahead of President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s state visit to Mongolia.
Aidar Amrebayev, director of the Center for Political Studies at the Institute of Philosophy, Political Science and Religious Studies, highlighted Kazakhstan and Mongolia’s aligned foreign policy approaches, especially in managing relations with China and Russia.
Both nations, he noted, are pursuing political modernization, with Mongolia’s economic goals mirroring Kazakhstan’s shift from resource-based to manufacturing-focused industries, especially in agriculture and livestock. Additionally, the countries plan to open a joint museum, fostering cooperation in education, science, archaeology, and nomadic history.
“There is a historical and cultural connection between our countries. Now we are developing a construct related to Jochi [Khan, the eldest son of the Mongol Emperor Genghis Khan] in Kazakhstan. Mongolia’s national and cultural identity is also based on the legacy of Genghis Khan,” Amrebayev noted.
Kazakhstan and Mongolia are advancing connectivity with a new road route through Oskemen and Ridder in Kazakhstan, crossing Tuyekta in Russia, and reaching Mongolia’s border. The 189-kilometer Kazakh section is already built, with plans for major repairs on 62 kilometers, enhancing transport links and enabling smoother economic and cultural exchanges. Amrebayev also highlighted the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route as a valuable opportunity for Mongolia to diversify its corridors toward the EU via Kazakhstan, noting that Tokayev’s upcoming visit may yield impactful initiatives.
