Kazakhstan and UN Focus on Preventive Measures to Combat Domestic Violence

Kazakhstan and the UN prioritized strengthening preventive measures to eradicate violence against women and children at an event titled Force of Change: The Role of Civil Society in Criminalizing Domestic Violence in Kazakhstan, held on Oct. 23 at the UN Headquarters in New York, reported the Kazakh Foreign Ministry’s press service.

Renowned Kazakh speakers, including Aida Alzhanova, Zhanna Urazbakhova, and Muslim Khassenov, briefed UN representatives on Kazakhstan’s civil society initiatives against domestic violence. They discussed how recent high-profile crimes against women prompted public outcry and legislative initiatives, culminating in the criminalization of domestic violence.

The speakers emphasized the country’s democratic reforms and President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s support for increased citizen engagement in political decision-making. They advocated for expanded legislation to combat stalking and harassment, integrating these issues into strategies aimed at eliminating violence against women and children.

Collaboration among civil society, government, academia, and parliament was highlighted as crucial for driving legislative change and fostering democratic progress.
