Prime Minister Bektenov Advocates Stronger Economic Cooperation at Eurasian Intergovernmental Council Meeting

Kazakh Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov outlined Kazakhstan’s priorities for strengthening regional economic cooperation during the expanded meeting of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council on Aug. 15, the Prime Minister’s press service reported. The council, a key decision-making body of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), brings together heads of government of the member states.

Among prospective transport projects, he cited the Turgundi–Herat railway, which is expected to handle up to 10 million tons of cargo annually. In April, Kazakhstan and Afghanistan signed a protocol of intent to initiate the construction of the Turgundi–Herat–Kandahar–Spin Boldak line.

The meeting concluded with the adoption of the Program for the Development of Exchange Trading, as well as concepts for establishing a common market for pharmaceuticals and medical devices. These initiatives aim to strengthen supply chains and ensure the availability of high-quality, safe products within the EAEU.

During his visit to Cholpon-Ata, Bektenov also took part in the council’s narrow-format meeting on Aug. 14, attended by Belarusian Prime Minister Alexander Turchin, Chairman of the Cabinet of Ministers and Head of the Presidential Administration of Kyrgyzstan Adylbek Kasymaliev, Russian Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, and Armenian Deputy Prime Minister Mher Grigoryan.

The next session of the Eurasian Intergovernmental Council is scheduled to be held on Sept. 29–30 in Minsk.
