Kazakhstan's Official Referendum Results Announced: 71% Support Nuclear Power Plant Proposal

Kazakhstan’s Central Referendum Commission has officially announced the results of an Oct. 6 national referendum at an Oct. 8 meeting, revealing 71.12% support the construction of a nuclear power plant.

As reported by the commission, out of 12.28 million eligible voters, 7.82 million took part in the referendum, yielding a turnout rate of 63.66%. Of those who cast their ballots, 5.56 million individuals (71.12%) expressed their support for the nuclear power plant proposal.

“Thus, the referendum is deemed valid, and the proposal has been approved,” said CEC Chairman Nurlan Abdirov.

Although specific details regarding the government's plans for construction and the timeline are not yet available, President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has proposed the possibility of involving an international consortium composed of leading companies in the project.

“This is not a simple issue. The government needs to conduct an analysis and hold the necessary negotiations. My personal view is that Kazakhstan should have an international consortium made up of global companies with the most advanced technologies. Beyond that, as they say, time will tell,” said Tokayev after casting his vote in the referendum on Oct. 6 in Astana.

While the government has characterized the nuclear power plant as crucial for diversifying the energy mix, enhancing energy security, and decreasing dependence on coal, its construction has elicited diverse opinions nationwide. The public has expressed concerns regarding the economic feasibility of the project, potential environmental risks, and the long-term storage of nuclear waste.
