Kazakhstan Welcomes Trump-Putin Summit in Alaska as Launch of High-Level Ukraine Talks

Kazakhstan has welcomed the Aug. 15 meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, viewing it as the beginning of high-level negotiations on peace in Ukraine, presidential press secretary Ruslan Zheldibay announced.

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev described the summit as a historic step, made possible by the “political will of the two leaders” and their “genuine desire to find common ground on key global issues,” including the cessation of hostilities in Ukraine, Zheldibay reported on behalf of the President.

The closely watched summit drew international attention, with the leaders holding nearly three hours of discussions. While no final agreements were reached, President Trump described the talks as yielding “some great progress.”

“We had an extremely productive meeting and many points were agreed to,” the White House wrote on X, quoting Trump.

Following the meeting, the two presidents issued a joint statement but did not take questions from the press. President Putin proposed holding the next round of talks in Moscow, to which Trump responded that it was “possibly happening.”
