Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ), the country’s national railway company, has taken a significant step to enhance cargo transit to Europe by expanding its terminal network. A memorandum of cooperation was signed on Nov. 21 in Budapest between KTZ, Hungary’s L.A.C. Holding, and China’s Xi’an Free Trade Port Construction and Operation, paving the way for a joint intermodal cargo terminal in the Hungarian capital.
The agreement, sealed during President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s state visit to Hungary, is set to bolster the China-Europe-China trade corridor, including transit via the Middle Corridor. The terminal, with an annual capacity of 230,000 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs), will streamline container train operations, reducing delivery times, transportation costs, and transshipment complexity.
Budapest’s advanced transport infrastructure will play a crucial role in enabling efficient multimodal shipping across Europe, reinforcing Kazakhstan’s position as a strategic transit hub between Asia and Europe.
This collaboration reflects the growing importance of Kazakhstan’s logistics network in global trade and highlights its commitment to strengthening economic ties with European partners.
