Kazakhstan has identified 5.2 million hectares of non-forested land within the country’s 31-million-hectare state forest fund that could be used for carbon projects, creating new opportunities for investment in emissions reduction and carbon sequestration. Kazakhstan has pledged to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 15% by 2030 and 17% by 2035 compared with 1990 levels, reported Kazinform on Aug. 13.
Ecology and Natural Resources Minister Yerlan Nyssanbayev said the identified land could support projects aimed at increasing carbon absorption and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. The initiative forms part of Kazakhstan’s broader efforts to attract climate-related investment and meet its international emissions reduction commitments.
According to Nyssanbayev, the country has significant potential for carbon projects in forestry, agriculture and energy efficiency. The government is also considering the use of Article 6 of the Paris Agreement to facilitate investment in projects focused on emissions reductions and carbon removal.
