President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s state visit to Hungary on November 19 marked a significant milestone in the growing relationship between the two nations. Rooted in shared historical connections dating back to the migration of Kipchak tribes to Hungary in the 13th century, the visit underscores the long-standing and evolving partnership between Kazakhstan and Hungary.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were officially established 32 years ago, with Hungary becoming the first Central European nation to sign a strategic partnership declaration with Kazakhstan. This move laid the foundation for a stable political dialogue that has continued to flourish, especially in aligning their positions on key geopolitical issues and regional security challenges.
Hungary has played a consistent and supportive role in Kazakhstan’s international endeavors. The European nation backed Kazakhstan’s bid for the chairmanship of the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) in 2010 and supported the country’s successful hosting of EXPO 2017. Furthermore, Hungary advocates for Kazakhstan’s inclusion in Council of Europe conventions on criminal justice and supports efforts to streamline visa agreements with EU countries, further strengthening ties between the two nations.
President Tokayev’s visit highlights the strategic importance of this partnership, with both countries reaffirming their commitment to deepening cooperation in various fields, from politics to trade and regional security. The ongoing collaboration between Kazakhstan and Hungary offers a model for enhancing diplomatic relations in Central Europe and beyond.
