The Anti-Corruption Agency's press service reported on April 5 that the Group of States against Corruption (GRECO) positively acknowledged Kazakhstan's endeavors in enhancing anti-corruption legislation. This recognition followed Kazakhstan's presentation of its first report at the 96th plenary meeting of GRECO in Strasbourg, France.
Experts specifically praised Kazakhstan's actions regarding the return of criminal proceeds, establishment of a beneficial owners' register, reinforcement of protections for whistleblowers, and regulation of conduct rules for civil servants.
Following the initial two assessment rounds, GRECO formulated 27 recommendations for Kazakhstan. These include conducting comprehensive studies to identify systemic corruption risks, involving non-governmental sectors in anti-corruption efforts, ensuring transparency in governmental decision-making, bolstering the independence of anti-corruption bodies, refining legislation on conflict of interest, and preventing corruption in public procurement.
GRECO aims to enhance anti-corruption policies in participating countries by crafting pertinent recommendations aligned with anti-corruption conventions.
Kazakhstan stands as the sole representative of Central Asia within GRECO, which comprises 46 European countries and the United States.
The country has another 18 months to enact legislative and practical measures to enhance anti-corruption policy in accordance with GRECO recommendations.(Source:astanatimes)
