The governments of Kazakhstan and China have reached an agreement on certain aspects of managing transboundary water resources

The Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation announced a noteworthy milestone on December 21 in its discussions with China regarding a water allocation agreement, as reported by the ministry’s press service.

Both Kazakhstan and China have achieved consensus on crucial elements, marking a significant stride in negotiations addressing the oversight of more than 20 rivers, notably the transboundary Yertys, Ili, and Yemel rivers.

The collaboration between Kazakhstan and China is exemplified by the management of the Khorgos River, which they share. A collaborative hydraulic facility has been established along its course, ensuring efficient water distribution. This facility operates with complete automation, employing locks to maintain equal water flow on both sides of the border. Adjustments made by one party are mirrored automatically on the other side. This innovative approach not only promotes cooperation but also serves as a model for similar projects.

Nurzhan Nurzhigitov, the Minister of Water Resources and Irrigation, highlighted the success of this joint effort.

"Kazakhstan and China jointly manage the Khorgos River, and our shared hydraulic facility is evidence of our commitment to effective water management. The fully automated system guarantees fair water distribution, benefiting both parties," he remarked. (Source:astanatimes)

Beyond the Khorgos River, Nurzhigitov disclosed plans for similar collaborative efforts, including the reconstruction of the Sumbe River and the establishment of a joint facility along the Ulken Ulasty River in the East Kazakhstan Region.
