EBRD Supports Renewable Energy and Logistics Expansion in Kazakhstan

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) is providing a loan of up to 25 million euros (approximately US$27 million) to Sarens Kazakhstan, a subsidiary of Belgium-based Sarens Group, to expand the country’s capacity in renewable energy development and logistics infrastructure, the company reported on Jan. 5.

The financing will allow Sarens Kazakhstan to scale up operations in heavy lifting, engineered transportation, and installation services. The funds will be used to acquire high-capacity cranes, specialized trailers, and other purpose-built vehicles, as well as to support working capital needs. The new equipment is expected to enable the installation of at least 11.75 gigawatts of additional wind power capacity, contributing to Kazakhstan’s goal of increasing renewable energy to 15% of total electricity generation by 2030.

In addition to supporting wind energy projects, the expansion will enhance logistics infrastructure along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route, strengthening regional connectivity and facilitating the movement of oversized industrial components required for energy and transport projects.

The EBRD highlighted that the loan provides longer-term financing than is currently available from local commercial banks, addressing a critical gap for capital-intensive infrastructure projects.

Kazakhstan remains one of the EBRD’s largest partners, with nearly 10.3 billion euros (U$11.1 billion) invested across 342 projects, primarily supporting private sector development and entrepreneurship. The latest financing underscores the bank’s commitment to Kazakhstan’s energy transition and its development as a regional logistics hub.
