E-Commerce in Kazakhstan Grows Fivefold Since 2020

Kazakhstan's e-commerce sector recorded transactions worth nearly 3.2 trillion tenge (US$6 billion) in the first 11 months of 2024, according to Trade and Integration Minister Arman Shakkaliyev at a Jan. 14 government meeting chaired by Prime Minister Olzhas Bektenov.

The sector now accounts for 14.5% of total retail trade, creating over 300,000 jobs and boosting labor productivity by over 30% compared to traditional retail. E-commerce volume in Kazakhstan has increased fivefold since 2020, and the government aims to nearly triple it to 9.3 trillion tenge (US$17.6 billion) by 2029.

Plans include legislative reforms, regional training programs, and financial support for entrepreneurs. An electronic platform for registering foreign marketplaces is also under consideration to address complaints about product safety, counterfeiting, and consumer protection.

KazPost CEO Assel Zhanassova highlighted the sector's role in boosting regional entrepreneurship and logistics. By 2029, parcel deliveries per person are projected to rise from five to 27 annually, supported by digital services like Qazpost Keruen for streamlined access to global marketplaces and customs.

Modern warehouses covering over 85,000 square meters are planned in Almaty, Aktobe, and Turkistan regions, with investments of approximately US$100 million to bolster domestic and cross-border trade.
