Astana to Host Regional Ecological Summit on Energy Transition and Climate Risks

Kazakhstan will host the Regional Ecological Summit (RES 2026) in Astana from April 22–24, with a key panel organized by the Ministry of Energy focusing on Central Asia’s energy transition.

The panel will address strategies for a just and balanced energy transition, emphasizing the modernization and decarbonization of all energy sources—including oil, gas, coal, nuclear, solar, and wind—while meeting rising global energy demand. The ministry highlighted that the transition challenge lies not in eliminating sources, but in making them cleaner, more efficient, and technologically advanced.

Discussions will also cover the role of digitalization and artificial intelligence in optimizing energy systems, improving grid reliability, and reducing sector-wide emissions. Kazakhstan is pursuing an evolutionary approach to energy transition, balancing environmental goals with national energy needs.

RES 2026 serves as an international platform for Central Asian countries and global partners to tackle environmental challenges, including climate change, water resource management, and sustainable natural resource use. The summit is expected to host 1,500 participants, including government officials, international organizations, businesses, and scientific experts.

The summit’s organization in partnership with the United Nations follows a proposal by President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev during the 78th UN General Assembly in 2023. Further information is available on the summit’s official website.
