UNICEF has initiated a campaign in Kazakhstan aimed at creating a safe digital environment for children

The UNICEF office in Kazakhstan has introduced the Cyber Tumar information and educational campaign, featuring a mascot from Kazakh culture. This campaign is designed to promote safe navigation in cyberspace, as reported by UNICEF's press service on Feb. 7.

The Cyber Tumar campaign, launched by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF) office in Kazakhstan, aims to provide children with information tools to navigate the online world safely and cope with potential risks.

With children in Kazakhstan increasingly spending more time online for entertainment and socializing, the campaign addresses the fact that a significant portion of them gain access to the Internet at a young age. Statistics show that 46% of children first engage with the Internet between the ages of five and eight, with another 5% gaining online access at age four or younger.

While the Internet offers numerous opportunities for learning and creativity, it also presents security risks, including cyberbullying. Studies indicate that cyberbullying is more prevalent among girls, with nearly twice as many girls reporting encounters with offensive messages compared to boys.

To address these issues, the Cyber Tumar campaign has created informative posters covering various aspects of online safety, including recognizing and addressing potential risks such as cyberbullying, sexual harassment, inappropriate content, trolling, digital security and privacy threats, and digital footprints.(Source:astanatimes)

Furthermore, the campaign provides practical guidance for parents on protecting children from existing threats and preventing excessive immersion in the virtual world.

Cyber Tumar is a collaborative effort launched in partnership with the European Union, the Committee for Children’s Rights Protection of the Kazakh Education Ministry, and the Peremena.media platform.
