Al Khaleej Sugar, one of the world’s largest sugar industry companies based in the United Arab Emirates, intends to construct a sugar plant in Kazakhstan’s Almaty Region, the regional administration’s press service reported following a meeting on April 27 between Almaty Region Governor Marat Sultangaziyev and the company’s Managing Director Sheikh Jamal Al Ghurair.
During the meeting, the parties discussed potential sites for the plant, sugar beet cultivation zones, and critical water supply issues. A land plot near the city of Konayev was identified as the most favorable location due to its logistical advantages. However, water availability remains a key challenge, with efforts underway to explore alternative irrigation sources.
Al Khaleej Sugar operates the world’s largest autonomous sugar factory and controls approximately 3% of the global refined sugar market. Sheikh Al Ghurair is also involved in diverse sectors, including construction and real estate.
To support the project’s success, the parties agreed to involve professional consultants to conduct a detailed analysis of the region’s hydrological resources and develop optimal water supply solutions.
