In 2023, Kazakhstan Railways (KTZ) reported a 7% increase in operational freight turnover compared to the previous year, reaching 269 billion ton-kilometers. Transit container shipments also saw significant growth, surpassing one million twenty-foot equivalent units, marking a 13.5% rise from the previous year.
The statement emphasized notable advancements in track repair work during the year, with 1,443 kilometers of railway track renovated, doubling the figure from 2022.
Construction projects initiated included the development of railway lines such as Darbaza – Maktaaral, Bakhty – Ayagoz (including the opening of the third border crossing with China), and a bypass line around Almaty.
Furthermore, over 300 kilometers of second tracks were laid on the Dostyk – Moiynty section. Notably, the Xi’an Dry Port, a crucial Chinese transport and logistics hub, witnessed the construction of a freight terminal specifically for Kazakhstan.(Source:astanatimes)
KTZ also implemented extensive measures to enhance working conditions for its employees. These measures included a 20% increase in salaries, the acquisition of 384 transportation units for the commute of linear personnel to work sites, and the installation of 132 modular buildings equipped with amenities for railway workers at remote stations along its network.
Looking ahead to 2024, KTZ plans to further expand its efforts. This includes increasing the number of modular buildings to over 120, focusing on enhancing transportation volumes, developing transit routes, implementing digitization programs, and modernizing railway infrastructure and rolling stock.
