KTZ Pilots Innovative Oil Shipment Format to China

Kazakhstan Temir Zholy (KTZ) has launched a pilot shipment of sunflower oil to China’s Jiangsu Province using 40-foot containers equipped with flexitanks, the company reported.

According to KTZ’s Integrated Planning Directorate, the new format will reduce transportation costs, speed up loading and unloading, and improve overall logistics efficiency. Flexitanks allow the transport of up to 26 tons of liquid cargo with enhanced protection against leaks and contamination.

Since 2020, KTZ has used 20-foot flexitank containers for vegetable oil exports, enabling a tenfold increase in supplies to China over five years. The transition to 40-foot containers is expected to further expand export volumes.

The initiative stems from agreements reached at the Kazakhstan–China Subgroup of Experts on Transportation and Marketing meeting in Zhengzhou in June 2025. Technical work was carried out by a Kazakh company in compliance with railway standards of both countries.

KTZ plans to expand innovative logistics solutions and diversify export routes to strengthen Kazakhstan’s role as a regional trade hub.
