Kazakhstan's gross domestic product (GDP) grew by 6% in the first five months of 2025 compared to the same period in the previous year, according to preliminary data from the Bureau of National Statistics. The growth was driven by positive dynamics across key sectors, including industry, construction, trade, transport, and communications.
Industrial Sector
Industrial output increased by 6.4%. Growth was observed in 17 regions, with the Zhambyl Region leading at 22.9%, supported by increased mining activities and the production of fertilizers, Portland cement, and sugar. Shymkent recorded growth of 18.9%, while the Turkistan and Zhetisu Regions each reported a 14.8% increase. Almaty city also demonstrated significant industrial growth of 14.1%.
Agricultural Sector
The agricultural sector expanded by 4%. Notable growth was reported in the Atyrau Region (+10.4%), North Kazakhstan Region (+7.5%), and Akmola Region (+6.5%), largely due to increased livestock and poultry production.
Construction and Housing
The construction sector recorded a 15.4% increase. Growth was reported in 18 regions, with the Mangystau Region doubling its output due to major infrastructure projects such as schools, a desalination plant, and hospital construction. Substantial growth was also recorded in the Kyzylorda Region (+64.5%), Kostanai Region (+57.8%), Astana (+51.8%), and the Turkistan Region (+46.6%).
More than six million square meters of housing were commissioned, representing a 5.7% increase compared to the same period in 2024. The most active regions for housing construction were Turkistan (+25.5%), Shymkent (+23.4%), and the Almaty Region (+20.4%).
Investment Activity
Investments in fixed assets rose by 18.2%, driven by capital inflows into the transportation sector, industrial production, social infrastructure, and equipment acquisition.
Trade Sector
Trade turnover increased by 7.8%. Wholesale trade, accounting for nearly 68% of the domestic trade structure, rose by 8.3%, while retail trade grew by 6.5%. The Turkistan Region demonstrated the highest growth in trade (+66.2%), followed by the Akmola Region (+48.9%) and Shymkent (+23.1%).
Transport and Communications
The transport sector grew by 23.1%, primarily due to a 17% increase in freight rail transport and a 13.8% rise in pipeline transportation. Notable regional growth was observed in the Zhetisu (+39.1%), Abai (+17.7%), and Aktobe Regions (+11.3%).
The communications sector expanded by 2.8%, supported by a 13.9% increase in internet services.
