Kazakhstan’s E-Commerce Market Expands Sevenfold Amid Rapid Digital Transformation
E-commerce continues to transform global retail as digital platforms reshape consumer behavior and business operations, Director of the Department for Domestic Trade Development at the Ministry of Trade and Integration Ansar Orazaliev said at a Central Communications Service (CCS) briefing.
Orazaliev noted that approximately 30% of the world’s population now purchases goods online, underscoring the sector’s accelerating global growth. International market estimates show that the global e-commerce market reached US$6.3 trillion in 2024, with projections rising to US$6.8–7 trillion in 2025, according to the CCS.
The landscape of global trade is also being transformed by rapid technological advancements, including the widespread adoption of artificial intelligence and increasingly personalized user experiences.
Kazakhstan is experiencing similar momentum. The country’s domestic e-commerce market has expanded sevenfold since 2020, firmly positioning online retail as a central component of the national trade system.
According to Orazaliev, Kazakhstan’s internal e-commerce turnover reached 3.2 trillion tenge (approximately US$5.93 billion) in 2024, representing 14.1% of total retail trade. The government expects the sector to reach 15% of total retail turnover by the end of 2025, with a longer-term target of 18.5% by 2029.
Market trends indicate increasingly defined consumer preferences. Electronics, mobile devices, and light industrial goods account for 62% of marketplace sales, while 38% come from everyday consumer products. The country is also witnessing rapid expansion in the e-grocery segment, with more households purchasing essential goods and daily items online.
Orazaliev emphasized that the continued digitalization of trade, rising demand for seamless online services, and the development of domestic marketplace ecosystems will remain key drivers of Kazakhstan’s retail sector in the coming years.
