Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and UAE Advance Study of CASA Railway Project

Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) have agreed to jointly assess the feasibility of establishing a railway corridor linking Central Asia with Pakistan’s seaports, according to the press service of the Prime Minister of Kazakhstan.

A memorandum of understanding on cooperation under the CASA railway project was signed by the transport ministries of Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan and the UAE Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure.

The proposed Kazakhstan–Uzbekistan–Afghanistan–Pakistan (CASA) railway is intended to establish an additional transport corridor between Central and South Asia. The project could facilitate international freight transportation and create opportunities for expanded trade, logistics and investment cooperation between the participating countries.

Under the memorandum, the parties will undertake technical and economic feasibility studies, as well as analytical assessments of the proposed route. The countries will also examine the feasibility of developing the railway infrastructure and related facilities required for the project.

The cooperation brings together Kazakhstan’s and Uzbekistan’s existing railway infrastructure and transit potential with the UAE’s experience in transport infrastructure development, logistics and large-scale investment projects.

The parties noted that the agreement is aimed at advancing the CASA railway initiative toward practical implementation and identifying appropriate mechanisms for its further development.
