Kazakhstan to Route Flights to the U.S. via London Pending Arrival of Long-Haul Aircraft

Kazakhstan’s Transport Minister, Nurlan Sauranbayev, announced at a government briefing that flights between Kazakhstan and the United States will temporarily require a connection in London due to current aircraft limitations.

Minister Sauranbayev explained that direct flights are not feasible at present without overflying the North Pole, which would necessitate passage through Russian airspace. Restrictions arising from the ongoing conflict and related sanctions have limited Russia’s willingness to permit foreign carriers to use its airspace.

The minister noted that operating the route safely and efficiently would require a long-haul aircraft, such as the Boeing Dreamliner, which is not currently available in Kazakhstan’s fleet. Until Kazakhstan acquires suitable aircraft, Air Astana will provide a temporary travel solution, routing flights through London to maintain connectivity with the United States.
