Kazakhstan Records Lowest Birth Rate in a Decade

From January to March 2025, Kazakhstan registered 77,300 live births—a nearly 16% decline compared to the same period last year—marking the lowest figure since at least early 2014, according to the Bureau of National Statistics via Data Hub (May 14).

While birth rates typically peak in the third quarter and dip in the first, this drop breaks the 11-year trend of staying above 90,000 births per quarter. The decline affected all 20 regions, with rural areas seeing a sharper fall (-18.1%) than urban ones (-14.2%).

Kazakhstan’s birth rate fell to 15.39 per 1,000 people, down 2.94 points year-on-year, continuing a downward trend since 2015. Deaths also decreased by 7.2% to 31,000, leading to a natural population increase of 46,300—a 20.7% drop and the lowest since at least 2014.
