Kazakhstan is advancing the integration of alternative energy and modernizing coal generation through clean technologies, aligning with President Kassym-Zhomart Tokayev’s directives, Energy Minister Yerlan Akkenzhenov reported on Sept. 9.
With confirmed coal reserves of 33.6 billion tons, a full transition from coal is currently unfeasible. The government is therefore prioritizing clean coal solutions to reduce environmental impact, in line with international ecological standards. Planned projects include combined heat and power plants in Kokshetau, Semei, and Ust-Kamenogorsk, as well as major power stations in Kurchatov and Ekibastuz.
Simultaneously, Kazakhstan will expand renewable energy capacity by 6.3 gigawatts (GW) over the next five years, strengthening its green energy portfolio. This dual strategy highlights the country’s commitment to energy security and sustainable development.
