Kazakhstan Plans to End Power Shortages
Kazakhstan is preparing to commission 845 megawatts of new power generation capacity in 2027 as it works to meet rising electricity demand, eliminate supply shortages and establish a reserve in the national power system.
According to the Energy Ministry, the additional capacity is expected to enable Kazakhstan to fully meet domestic electricity demand as early as the first quarter of 2027. By the end of the year, the country is projected to record an electricity surplus of approximately 1.3 billion kilowatt-hours.
The expansion planned for 2027 follows a larger increase in generating capacity expected this year. Kazakhstan plans to commission around 2.6 gigawatts of new capacity in 2026, including four gas-fired power plants, expansions of two existing power stations and 10 renewable energy facilities.
