Kazakhstan Outlines New Stage of Nuclear Sector Development at IAEA
Kazakhstan is entering a new stage of nuclear sector development, with a focus on nuclear energy, science, medicine and high-tech industries, Deputy Chairman of the Agency for Atomic Energy Gumar Sergazin said at the 70th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) General Conference.
Sergazin said the country’s nuclear agenda is guided by the newly approved Strategy for the Development of the Nuclear Industry until 2050. The strategy provides for the creation of a national nuclear cluster bringing together energy, industry, science, education and high-tech manufacturing, according to the agency’s press service.
He also highlighted Kazakhstan’s role in global nuclear supply chains and its contribution to nuclear fuel security through the IAEA Low Enriched Uranium Bank, which is hosted in Kazakhstan.
International cooperation remains a key element of the country’s nuclear policy. A roadmap signed in 2026 to expand cooperation between Kazakhstan and the IAEA through 2036 covers nuclear energy, nuclear medicine, scientific research, nuclear safety and workforce training.
Kazakhstan’s national statement also marked the 35th anniversary of the closure of the Semipalatinsk Nuclear Test Site. The country reaffirmed its commitment to nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation and called for the early entry into force of the Comprehensive Nuclear-Test-Ban Treaty.
Kazakhstan said it remains committed to strengthening its strategic partnership with the IAEA and advancing the peaceful use of nuclear energy in support of energy security, scientific development, medicine and sustainable development.
