Kazakhstan plans to increase oil exports through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan (BTC) pipeline to 1.7 million tons in 2025, announced Minister of Energy Yerlan Akkenzhenov during a press briefing held on July 31 in Astana. The initiative is part of a broader strategy to diversify export routes and enhance bilateral energy cooperation with Türkiye.
According to the minister, approximately 800,000 tons of Kazakh oil were transported through the BTC pipeline during the first half of 2024. The total volume for the year is projected to reach 1.4 million tons, with a planned increase to 1.7 million tons in 2025.
“The Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan route is one of the key alternative export channels for Kazakh oil, and we intend to steadily increase its potential,” he said.
Both parties have expressed commitment to expanding the pipeline's capacity through increased supply volumes, improved logistical coordination, and the resolution of existing operational challenges. These measures are intended to bolster the efficiency and long-term resilience of the route.
“Both companies are now engaged in consultations, studying fields, and assessing conditions under which Turkish Petroleum could begin operations in Kazakhstan,” said Akkenzhenov.
Akkenzhenov also highlighted the deepening energy partnership between Kazakhstan and Türkiye. During President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s recent official visit to Ankara, a memorandum of understanding was signed between national oil companies KazMunayGas and Turkish Petroleum. The agreement outlines Turkish Petroleum’s potential involvement in the development of oil and gas fields in Kazakhstan.
