Kazakhstan is upgrading its railway infrastructure to enhance its connectivity and solidify its position as a key player in global logistics. Speaking at a government meeting on November 26, Transport Minister Marat Karabayev highlighted efforts to improve five major international railway corridors linking Chinese markets with Europe and Central Asia.
Currently, there are 27 railway border points between Kazakhstan and its five neighboring countries, with stations like Dostyk, Altynkol, and Saryagash playing a critical role in connecting China and Central Asia. Plans are underway to expand inspection points, terminal capacities, and track systems at these locations. Specifically, the capacity of Dostyk and Altynkol will double.
Karabayev also outlined progress on four key railway projects totaling over 1,300 kilometers. These include the ongoing construction of the second tracks on the Dostyk-Moyinty line (836 kilometers) and the Almaty bypass (74 kilometers), as well as new lines for Darbaza-Maktaaral (152 kilometers) and Bakhty-Ayagoz (272 kilometers). Construction of the Dostyk-Moyinty and Almaty bypass lines is 75% complete.
These developments will significantly boost the capacity of the Dostyk station to 35 million tons, streamline cargo transit through Almaty, free up Saryagash for other logistics, and increase total throughput by an additional 20 million tons towards Central Asia and China. These upgrades are expected to enhance Kazakhstan’s role as a vital transit hub between Asia and Europe.
