Kazakhstan to Donate 1,500 Saiga Antelopes to China

President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev has announced Kazakhstan’s decision to transfer 1,500 saiga antelopes to China to support the restoration of the species in the country’s western regions. The initiative was revealed during the official visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to Kazakhstan, as reported by Akorda on June 17. President Xi expressed appreciation for Kazakhstan’s gesture of environmental cooperation.

The saiga antelope, known for its distinctive bulbous nose, now thrives in Kazakhstan’s central and western steppes. Recent data indicate that the saiga population in the country has reached a historic high of 4.1 million.

Efforts to monitor and protect this ancient species have been significantly enhanced through satellite telemetry, which allows scientists to map migration patterns and determine optimal conservation strategies.
