Kazakhstan Can Become Electricity Exporter After Ending Power Shortages
Kazakhstan plans to add 845 megawatts of new power generation capacity in 2027, with the government aiming to eliminate electricity shortages.
According to the Energy Ministry, the new capacity is expected to enable the country to fully meet domestic electricity demand by the first quarter of 2027. By the end of the year, Kazakhstan is projected to have an electricity surplus of approximately 1.3 billion kilowatt-hours.
The planned expansion will combine gas-fired power generation with renewable energy projects, reflecting the government’s approach of diversifying the country’s energy mix while increasing overall generating capacity.
The 2027 projects will follow a significantly larger expansion scheduled for 2026, when Kazakhstan expects to commission about 2.6 gigawatts of new generation capacity. The program includes four new gas-fired power plants, expansions at two existing facilities and 10 renewable energy projects.
