On March 19, the Kazakh Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation announced that Kazakhstan and Uzbekistan have reached an agreement to install meters to accurately measure the volume of water consumed by both countries.
Under this agreement, Kazakhstan will install meters on Uzbekistan’s territory, and vice versa, enabling online data exchange. This holds particular significance for Kazakhstan, given its limited access to river sources. Experts from both countries are currently determining the locations for installing water meters and negotiating with international organizations for their involvement. Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov has also revealed plans to initiate similar discussions with neighboring countries in April.
Last December, Nurzhigitov outlined Kazakhstan's intention to construct 20 new reservoirs in the coming years, aiming to reduce the country’s dependency on water supply from neighboring countries by an average of 25%.
