Kazakhstan and Hungary Launch Joint Master’s Program in Water Diplomacy

The Kazakh National University of Water Resources and Irrigation (KazNUVHI) has partnered with Hungary’s Corvinus University to develop a joint master’s program in water resource management, emphasizing water diplomacy.

The initiative is supported by a €60,000 Erasmus Mundus Design Measure grant awarded in August to a consortium of three European and four Central Asian universities, including KazNUVHI, the Ministry of Water Resources and Irrigation reported on Sept. 11.

The consortium will convene its first meeting in Budapest at the end of October to begin program development. Over the next 15 months, a comprehensive proposal will be prepared for submission to the European Commission. Once approved, the program will operate with a budget of €5 million over six years. Plans also include establishing a Joint Center for Water Resource Management and Water Diplomacy at KazNUVHI.

Minister Nurzhan Nurzhigitov emphasized that the initiative aligns with President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev’s strategy to train highly qualified specialists and strengthen human capital in Kazakhstan’s strategic water sector.
