Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev underscored the significance of Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov’s official visit to Astana on March 11 in strengthening multifaceted interstate relations, reported Akorda.
Bayramov conveyed gratitude on behalf of Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and the people of Azerbaijan for Kazakhstan’s prompt assistance following the Azerbaijan Airlines plane crash in Aktau.
Discussions covered major strategic initiatives, including the construction of a fiber-optic communication line and a deep-sea electric cable along the Caspian Sea. The parties also addressed issues of trade, investment, digitization, and transit and transport collaboration.
During his meeting with Kazakh Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Murat Nurtleu, Bayramov welcomed the fivefold increase in trade turnover over the past five years, which reached $533.4 million in 2024. Both sides affirmed their commitment to raising this figure to $1 billion.
The officials highlighted the successful transportation of Kazakhstan’s energy resources via Azerbaijan. By the end of 2024, oil transported through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline amounted to 1.4 million tons, with expectations to increase annual volumes to 2.2 million tons.
The parties agreed to strengthen cooperation in agriculture, industrial collaboration, space, and telecommunications. The establishment of the Kazakh-Azerbaijani Investment Fund for Direct Investments in 2024 further enhances dialogue between the two nations.
Cultural and humanitarian ties were also a focus. Over the past two years, the Days of Culture of Kazakhstan and Azerbaijan received broad public engagement. In March, the Days of Kazakh Higher Education in Baku resulted in 23 Kazakh universities signing 40 memorandums on inter-university cooperation.
