Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev emphasized the importance of enacting legislation designed to implement vital measures for the country's social and economic transformation. This directive came during a meeting on January 5 with Yerlan Koshanov, the Chair of the Mazhilis, the lower house of the Parliament, as reported by the Akorda press service.
Koshanov reported that since the start of the session, the Mazhilis has passed and forwarded 35 laws to the Senate, the upper house of Parliament. These laws encompass various aspects such as the regulation of the National Fund for Children program, legislation concerning subsoil use, business regulations, mentorship, child safety, and additional compensations for employees exposed to hazardous work conditions.
Presently, the Mazhilis members are deliberating on 69 draft laws, with approximately one-third of these initiatives originating from within the Mazhilis. Their current focus involves the development of the Budget Code, laws to alleviate the population's debt burden, housing policies, government procurement regulations, science and technology initiatives, consumer protection, heat power engineering, media regulations, efforts against human trafficking, and other legislative measures.
Moreover, the Mazhilis has conducted parliamentary hearings on enhancing the financial literacy of the population and convened government meetings to address the state of the health insurance system, combat drug-related crimes, and formulate trade policy strategies.
Since the start of the year, deputies have been visiting regions to engage with the public and oversee the execution of the President's directives aimed at enhancing people's well-being.
President Tokayev has praised the outcomes of the Mazhilis' efforts in 2023, noting that the enacted laws have a direct and positive effect on enhancing the quality of life for citizens.
