EU Strengthens Strategic Partnership with Kazakhstan

The European Union has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening and expanding cooperation with Kazakhstan, underscoring the strategic importance of Central Asia in its foreign policy. During a meeting on March 13 with Kazakh President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, EU Commissioner for International Partnerships Jozef Síkela emphasized the EU's intention to ensure a more sustainable and comprehensive engagement with Kazakhstan and the wider region.

According to the Akorda press service, President Tokayev reiterated Kazakhstan's role as the EU's key partner in Central Asia. He highlighted the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement (EPCA) as a robust framework for fostering multifaceted interaction between the two parties.

Discussions focused on practical initiatives, including the development of transport corridors, logistics infrastructure, sustainable energy, and digital solutions. Both sides also exchanged views on regional and global challenges, reaffirming their commitment to coordinating efforts at the forthcoming EU-Central Asia summit.

In conjunction with the visit, Kazakhstan and the EU signed several significant agreements under the Global Gateway Strategy. These included a $3.3 million contract with the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) to enhance cooperation in critical raw materials and a $217.5 million framework loan agreement between the European Investment Bank (EIB) and the Development Bank of Kazakhstan (DBK) for investments in sustainable transport and renewable energy projects.

Additionally, a $19.6 million EU-backed guarantee will support initiatives aimed at advancing the Trans-Caspian Transport Corridor and the Team Europe Initiative on Water, Energy, and Climate Change. These agreements are expected to further solidify the EU-Kazakhstan strategic partnership while fostering economic growth and regional connectivity.
