Coal Remains Kazakhstan’s Main Source of Electricity

Coal continues to be the primary source of electricity generation in Kazakhstan, accounting for 62.1% of total power output, according to the Ministry of Energy. The ministry reported that Kazakhstan is continuing efforts to modernize its energy sector and diversify generation sources while ensuring reliable electricity supplies and strengthening national energy security.

Gas-fired power plants account for 23.4% of total electricity generation, making them the second-largest source of power in the country. Hydropower plants, excluding small hydroelectric facilities, contribute 7.5% of total output and play an important role in supporting grid stability and providing low-carbon electricity.

Renewable energy sources continue to expand their contribution to the national energy mix, with their share reaching 7% of total electricity generation.

According to the ministry, ongoing modernization of existing infrastructure and the construction of new energy facilities are supporting the development of a more diversified and resilient power system.
