Balkhash Airport Resumes Operations Following Modernization

Balkhash Airport in the Karagandy Region has resumed operations following the completion of reconstruction works, according to the regional administration.

The airport welcomed its first flights from Astana and Almaty on June 1 after the reopening. The modernization project included upgrades to key airfield infrastructure, including the apron and taxiway, as well as the construction of a new facility for special transport services. New airfield and ground support equipment was also installed.

As a result of the reconstruction, the airport’s passenger handling capacity increased from 60 to 80 passengers per hour.

Officials noted that the modernization was carried out with a focus on preserving the architectural appearance of the airport’s historic terminal building, which dates back to the 1960s, while upgrading its internal infrastructure to meet modern operational standards.

Following the reopening, flights between Balkhash and Astana are operating daily, while services between Balkhash and Almaty are available six times per week.

Balkhash Airport serves the city of Balkhash in the Karagandy Region, located near Lake Balkhash, one of Kazakhstan’s largest inland lakes and a popular tourist destination.
