Rail Cargo Austria, a subsidiary of ÖBB-Holding, and KTZ Express have agreed to develop intermodal transportation along the Trans-Caspian International Transport Route (TITR) and to facilitate the use of ÖBB-Holding AG’s terminals and railway infrastructure across Central and Eastern Europe.
The announcement was made during the visit of an Austrian business delegation to Astana in late November, led by Peter Haubner, Second President of the Austrian National Council. The delegation’s visit, organized with the support of Alexander Andreas Schierhuber, Honorary Consul of Kazakhstan in Lower Austria, aimed to strengthen dialogue with Kazakhstan’s senior political and economic leadership.
The agreement with the Austrian railway company includes plans to develop terminal capacity and explore potential projects for constructing new logistics terminals in the region, thereby expanding Kazakhstan’s access to European markets and enhancing the efficiency of transit shipments between Asia and Europe.
During the visit, Haubner held meetings with Deputy Prime Minister Roman Sklyar, where they reviewed the activities of the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic, Agricultural, Environmental, Industrial, Technical, and Technological Cooperation, as well as the Business Council, to further advance trade and investment ties. Prospects for collaboration in energy, mechanical engineering, the agro-industrial sector, and infrastructure were also discussed.
Austrian officials met with Minister of Industry and Construction Yersaiyn Nagaspayev to explore technology transfer initiatives and joint ventures, reflecting Austria’s commitment to supporting Kazakhstan’s modernization agenda.
In addition, the leaders of the Austrian Railway Industry Association signed agreements with the Union of Machine Builders of Kazakhstan to promote industrial cooperation and the development of railway technology.
