Astana Sees Record Growth in Public Transport Use, Reaching 1.1 Million Daily Trips

Daily public transport ridership in Astana reached 1.1 million passengers in 2025, a 37% increase compared to 2024, Mayor Zhenis Kassymbek said at a Dec. 22 briefing at the Central Communications Service.

Public transport now accounts for 43% of all trips in the capital. City authorities aim to raise this share to 65%, approaching levels seen in cities with highly developed transport systems.

The growth was driven by large-scale fleet renewal. In 2025, Astana purchased 422 new buses, bringing the total fleet to 1,749 vehicles. Over the past two years, 48% of the bus fleet has been modernized.

Further expansion is planned for 2026, with the delivery of 485 additional buses, around 10% of which will be electric. This will increase the total fleet to 2,100 units.

The city is also expanding its bus lane network, which currently spans 140 kilometers. An additional 30 kilometers of dedicated lanes are planned next year to improve speed and reliability of public transport.
