Astana LRT Records More Than Two Million Passengers

Astana’s light rail transit (LRT) system, Tarlan, carried 2,076,980 passengers in June, its first full month of operation, according to Kazakhstan’s Bureau of National Statistics.

Official statistics count each journey as a separate passenger trip, the First Credit Bureau reported on July 16. June ridership was close to the 2.4 million passengers transported by the Almaty Metro during the same period.

Despite similar passenger numbers, Tarlan recorded higher passenger turnover, reaching 46.5 million passenger-kilometers, compared to 34.9 million passenger-kilometers for the Almaty Metro. Passenger turnover measures both the number of passengers and the distance traveled.

The higher figure is largely attributable to the longer length of the Astana LRT line, which extends 22.4 kilometers, compared with the 13.4-kilometer Almaty Metro network.

June was the first full month of operations following the launch of the Tarlan line on May 16, connecting Astana International Airport with the city’s new railway station.

From its opening through the end of June, the system transported 3.2 million passengers and generated 503.1 million tenge (US$1 million) in fare revenue.
